Emotive Displays and Social Robotics

Social robot?

Speaking of social robots, those adorable droids from star wars come to my mind

Robots are not only serving human like a tool, they could also interacts and communicates with humans nowadays. We define those robots which look more human or have certain ways to interact with human sociability, as social robots.

So, what is a social robot? Understanding Social Robots offers one interesting perspective of what a social robot is:

Social robot = robot + social interface

Here are some social robots I heard:

Jibo; Norby; Vector; Nao; Pepper; Aisoy; Hookie; KLM's Robot Spencer;; Cozmo

Look at Cozmo's face, how adorable. Have you ever wonder how they design it?

Emotive Display

Now, how those robots show their emotion? Besides the technical modeling and algorithm, there are multiple ways to express the feeling of robots. I personally like those blinking eyes and sad faces like Cozmo. It's not aggressive or too humanizes. It could also be an eye like jobo. I guess everyone has their own preference.

As an interface interacts with the human, there's some basic requirement such as visually attractive. however, since it is a robot, there's no limitation or stereotype for what it has to be. And it also depends on the situation. Different environments and social partners might need different emotional display methods.

Look at current technology, robots could be our teacher, therapist, companions and more. Since they could express their feeling and answer our questions in some way. We could have further deep communication to get a better result or service from robots. How exciting it is.
